Considering getting a 4th Covid vaccine (2nd booster)?
Here is some great information to guide you.
If you haven’t yet had your vaccine, or you haven’t had a booster yet, please skip to the next panel below.
Currently, the CDC is recommending an additional booster with Pfizer or Moderna for any adult, over age 50, who received their first booster more than 4 months ago.
At Evolve, we agree with the CDC’s recommendation. We’ve attempted to best summarize the data in the table below. Original data found at this link: New England Journal).
Data from a recent study of over 500,000 people over age 60 demonstrated a reduced risk of dying from Covid-19 by 78% after 4th vaccine (2nd booster).
How Effective Are Covid Vaccines?
11+ billion doses given worldwide.
13.75 million are now administered each day.
65+%of the world population has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Are Covid Vaccines Safe?
What We Know
- COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.
- CDC recommends everyone ages 5 years and older get vaccinated as soon as possible to protect against COVID-19 and its potentially severe complications.
- Millions of people in the United States have received COVID-19 vaccines under the most intense safety monitoring program in U.S. history.
- CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal agencies continue to monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.
- Adverse events described on this page have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)external icon.
- VAERS accepts reports of any adverse event following vaccination.
- mRNA technology used in the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines has been in development for over 15 years.
Are there risks or safety concerns regarding the Covid Vaccines?
More than 562 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were administered in the United States from December 14, 2020, through April 4, 2022.
During this time, VAERS received 13,853 preliminary reports of death (0.0025%) among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine. CDC and FDA clinicians review reports of death to VAERS including death certificates, autopsy, and medical records.
Myocarditis
mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) have been associated with inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis), but the vast majority occurred in young adolescent males.
On the other hand, getting Covid-19, the disease, also can cause myocarditis — and the risk in unvaccinated individuals is roughly 10 times higher than the risk of the vaccine-induced problem.
To learn more about myocarditis, and information on whether to vaccinate your child if this is your concern, you can read more here (CDC).
Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)
GBS is a rare disorder where the body’s immune system damages nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.
GBS has only been associated with J&J vaccine.
Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS)
TTS is a rare but serious adverse event that causes blood clots in large blood vessels and low platelets (blood cells that help form clots).
As of March 31, 2022, more than 18.5 million doses of the J&J vaccines but only 60 confirmed cases of TTS.
What Are My Odds of Having an Adverse Reaction?
-
One in 20.2 million doses resulted in Guillain Barre Syndrome (J&J)
-
One in 3.0 million doses resulted in platelet clotting problem (J&J)
-
One in 3.5 million doses resulted in myocarditis (Pfizer/Moderna)
